TOP KNOWLEDGE — WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW RIGHT NOW
IS SERGIO ROMO A LEGIT SAVES OPTION AGAIN?
The Rays are hot and Sergio Romo is notching saves. Does he bring value to my Fantasy team. Like anything in Fantasy baseball, we ask the question – what’s likely to happen the rest of the season?
Let’s look at the numbers first:
Keep in mind he has also “started” five games as well – this is the Rays. We are clearly not seeing the Romo of old, the one who had a 14.0 K/BB ratio in 2011 as a set-up man for the Giants. We are seeing a player who is getting saves – and that might be all that matters to your team.
Early in the season, we reminded you that you could win championships with six weeks of Jed Lowrie, then six weeks of another player, etc… It’s not always about the rest of the season. Sometimes the rest of the month will do.
And we think the rest of this month might be the only good time to roster Romo. Let’s look at some other stats:
It’s a bit unfair to compare 35-year-old Sergio Romo to his entire career, but now that we have we see that Romo is a shell of himself. Only his ground ball tendency is better, which gives us a bit of hope about his ERA. But that is mostly cancelled out by the 1.33 WHIP. Just hope the walks come before the ground balls so he can induce a double play.
We don’t think we need to dig any deeper, but in the spirit of due diligence (and being completely sure) let’s look at other factors:
This is a disaster. Hitters, overall, are swinging less, which is contributing to both walks and hitters getting ahead in the count. When they do swing, both overall and in the zone (z-contact) they are making much more contact than they did even last season. Velocities for Romo don’t mean much, but if he’s going to throw the slider almost 60 percent, batters will lay off to gain an advantage.
So what would we do? If we needed saves for our team, sure we’d take a shot on Romo for a couple of weeks and maybe re-assess our entire roster at the all-star break. He could rip off another five or so saves and bring real temporary value.
But he’s also as likely to blow a save and harm (somewhat) your ERA and WHIP.
Do not count on him after August 1, unless he somehow finds the fountain of youth in July. But winning a Fantasy championship is not always pretty. Saves are saves and he’s getting them now. Do the math, do more research, then make your move, either way.

Today @BatFlipCrazy is thinking about barrels. Which is ironic, because Big Mac is thinking about whiskey.
And today it’s just words, not 1,000 of them:
